About the Institute

The August Chełkowski Institute of Physics is divided into seven experimental and four theoretical research groups. Most of the experimental activities are concentrated on the condensed matter physics. Here are the main experimental research topics:

  • properties and technology of mono- and polycrystalline intermetallic compounds and perovskites;
  • properties and technology of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials;
  • properties and technology of magnetic materials;
  • investigation of crystal structures and their defects; molecular dynamics and phase transitions.

In addition there are a medical physics group studying electromagnetic interaction in biological materials and a nuclear physics group whose activities include nuclear reactions, nuclear structure and applications of nuclear methods and technology. Both groups are also interested in the environment and pollution prevention/control.

The theoretical research activities include:

  • Theory of condensed matter (mesoscopic systems, carbon-nanotubes, strongly correlated electron systems, superconductivity and magnetism, band structure calculations);
  • Statistical Physics (random phenomena and stochastic processes, growth processes. Brownian motors, critical phenomena and phase transitions);
  • Theory of elementary particles (precision tests of the Standard Model and its extensions, multi-loop calculations of virtual and radiation corrections, investigations of properties of neutrino and CP symmetry breaking).
  • Theoretical Astrophysics and Cosmology (observational tests of dark energy models, strong gravitational lensing, gravitational waves, astroparticle physics, properties of dense nuclear matter in neutron stars, quantum gravity, physics of complex systems and networks, quantum theory and mathematical physics).
